John Taylor: A Lifelong Friendship That Transcends Time and Music

For John Taylor, bassist and founding member of the iconic 80s band Duran Duran, friendship has been a constant throughout his life's journey. In an exclusive interview with us recently, he reflected on one particularly special bond - his enduring relationship with former bandmate Andy Taylor.

As we spoke about their complex history together, John couldn't help but chuckle wistfully as memories flooded back of the good times they shared both on and off stage. 'It's happened before; he's left before,' he quipped dryly, recalling how often his old friend had bid farewell to Duran Duraonly for them all to rekindle their creative spark once again.

But despite numerous breakups and reconciliations over the years (Andy first departed in 1986), John remains adamant that beneath all the ups-and-downs lies an unshakeable foundation of true friendship. 'We've had our fair share of disagreements, no doubt about it,' he admits candidly. However, as any long-term partnership will tell you - personal or professional - sometimes life simply takes its toll.

When asked directly whether Andy's departure from Duran Duraffectively marked the end of their close friendship altogether, John pauses thoughtfully before offering a typically measured assessment: 'I think it's complicated.' He sighs heavily before continuing candidly:

'I mean we're not exactly best mates anymore; I'd say more like acquaintances who occasionally bump into each other at industry events. But you know what? That's okay. People grow apart and move on with their lives - even if that means following very different paths in life.'

Yet despite the distance between them today, there remains an undeniable sense of affection still burning bright beneath John's witty banter when he reminisces about his former bandmate.

'Look,' he confesses matter-of-factly. 'Andy was a big part of my life for many years - and vice versa, I'm sure.' And as we wrap up our conversation, it becomes clear that even though their professional paths may have diverged irreversibly at some point or another, the bond between these two old friends remains strong enough to weather any storm.

As John so aptly puts it himself in a more recent interview: 'Four out of five 'of us' have rediscovered each other...and realized that we're the best mates we've ever had.
